Finding a Domain Name for your Business

With the Internet getting very crowded these days, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get the domain name of your choice. I, for instance, tried to get my own name as a domain, but it was already taken by a realtor in California. Doing some research and using a little creativity will get you the perfect name for your company.

How do I choose a domain name?

Your domain name should be revelant to your business. If you can’t find one that is an exact match for your company name, then find one that is based on what your products or services are. Your domain name should also be memorable and able to be spelled easily. If your restaurant name is “Aliments Francais”, you may want to consider www.frenchfood.com as your domain name. The length of the name should be considered as well -- the shorter the better! You can use up to 63 characters for the name, but you also want customers, right?

How do I find domains that are available?

BustAname.com has a word combiner that allows you to put in keywords and will combine them into a potential domain name. It even has synonym and sorting functions. If you have an idea of a name you want, GoDaddy.com has a search tool that is easy to use.

What extension should I use?

There are many extensions out there, but .com is by far the most popular. Customers often assume that .com is behind every domain name and may have trouble remembering any other extension. Non-profits use .org as expected. Two other extensions, .biz and .info, are becoming increasingly popular. An extension that refers to “network”, .net, is often used when .com is not available.

The Last Word

Research, research, research. Be sure to check out the domains that have similar names to yours and with different extensions. A few minutes of research can alleviate confusion about your business and can bring customers to your site easily.
